Documents to Gather Before Calling Your Lender

You may not need every item below, but gathering what you have can make it easier to answer questions and keep track of your situation.

Loan and property information

  • Recent mortgage statements and letters from your mortgage servicer
  • Property tax and homeowners insurance information
  • Notices related to default, foreclosure, or a scheduled sale
  • Information about other mortgages, liens, or property-related debts

Household financial information

  • Recent pay stubs or other proof of household income
  • Recent bank statements if requested through an official process
  • A simple list of monthly expenses
  • A short explanation of the hardship and whether it is temporary or ongoing

Keep a conversation file

Save copies of what you send. Keep notes from every call, including names, dates, reference numbers, and promised next steps. Use only official contact information shown on trusted account documents or independently verified websites.

Never share passwords, complete bank login details, credit card numbers, or unnecessary sensitive information.
